Religion is a word used to define belief systems that are based on observable institutions, doctrines, ceremonies, and practices. Faith, on the other hand, is a belief that is held in the participant’s mind, but whose origin and significance are not observable. It is about transcendence, which is beyond the participant’s comprehension.
Transcendence
In religious studies, transcendence refers to the notion of the transcendental, or inconceivable, beyond the realm of ordinary experience. In the biblical texts, transcendence is referred to as a double vision, one wherein we can discern something beyond everyday life. Jacob, for instance, interpreted his dream at Bethel as a revelation from God. In another passage, plague survivors spoke in whispers inside the house, and saw it as punishment for their sins. Similarly, Samuel heard God’s voice, and interpreted it as Eli, who was the prophet Eli. These examples show the role of transcendence in religion.
Faith
In the modern world, many Europeans find it difficult to reconcile their religious beliefs and rationality. The theological frameworks of religious belief are increasingly viewed as incompatible with the modern, scientific mind. Moreover, religious beliefs have been used to marginalize and oppress whole groups in society, causing many to question their validity and effectiveness.
Animism
Animism is a religion in which people believe that all objects are alive and have a spiritual essence. All objects are seen as living beings and are therefore spiritually valuable. This philosophy is popular amongst Buddhists and Hindus and is also practiced by some Muslims.
Anglicanism
The Anglican religion is one of the largest branches of Christianity. It developed from the practices, liturgy, and identity of the Church of England after the English Reformation. It has around 110 million adherents worldwide.
Islam
Islam is one of the major world religions. Its core beliefs include a monotheistic belief in God and strict adherence to essential religious practices. In its early years, Islam spread rapidly throughout the Middle East, Africa, Europe, the Indian subcontinent, the Malay Peninsula, and China. It is now present in more than 140 countries around the world. Though the religion has seen many sectarian movements throughout its history, it is a highly cohesive faith.
