The History of Automobiles

Automobiles

Before Benz invented the gas-powered car, there were no automobiles. Until the early 1900s, horse-drawn carriages were the only vehicles available. Cugnot’s inventions, however, were limited by water problems. When Benz & Cie was formed, they were the largest manufacturer in the world.

Benz & Cie

Benz and Daimler were pioneers of the automotive industry. Although they did not meet, they both worked together to create lightweight internal combustion engines. In 1886, they patented the Benz Patent-Motorwagen. The car resembled a horse-drawn carriage but was constructed from steel tubing and woodwork panels, and had steel wheels. The Benz Patent-Motorwagen was sold in Europe for about $150, or about $2,500 in today’s dollar terms.
